💡 1: 316L Steel Introduction

SAE 316L grade stainless steel, sometimes referred to as A4 stainless steel or marine grade stainless steel, is the second most common austenitic stainless steel after 304/A2 stainless steel. Its primary alloying constituents after iron, are chromium (between 16-18%), nickel (10-12%) and molybdenum (2-3%), with small quantities of silicon, phosphorus & sulfur also present. The addition of molybdenum provides greater corrosion resistance than 304, with respect to localized corrosive attack by chlorides and to general corrosion by reducing acids, such as sulfuric acid. 316L grade is the low carbon version of 316 stainless steel. When cold worked, 316 can produce high yield and tensile strengths similar to Duplex stainless grades.

For elevated temperature applications the high carbon variant, 316H stainless steel and the stabilised grade 316Ti stainless steel should be employed.

Frequently Asked Questions
What makes 316L stainless steel "marine grade"?
It contains 2-3% molybdenum, which significantly increases resistance to chlorides (like seawater) and localized corrosion compared to standard 304 stainless steel.
What is the difference between 316 and 316L?
The "L" stands for "Low Carbon." 316L has a maximum carbon content of 0.03%, which minimizes harmful carbide precipitation during welding.
What size ranges are available for the round bars?
Round bars are available in diameters ranging from 0.1mm up to 500mm. Forged materials can reach up to 1000mm in diameter.
In what industries is 316L commonly used?
It is widely used in food processing, medical implants, coastal architectural fittings, chemical transportation, and boat fittings due to its superior corrosion resistance.
What surface conditions can I order?
Options include Black, Peeled, Polished, Machined, and Sand blasted surfaces depending on your specific requirements.
Are the products tested for quality?
Yes, products undergo various tests including tensile strength, yield strength, ultrasonic testing (UT), and magnetic particle testing to ensure compliance with standards.
